Third Grade News for the Week
of September 29
The
kids have been working hard this year on various projects. I hope to see everyone here Wednesday night
for open house!
In Math we are working with money. We are counting money, finding equivalent amounts,
and counting change. Please take the
time this week to work with your student on counting money. Let him or her count the change in your
wallet or let him or her count out the change to give to the cashier at a
store. Work on counting coin amounts
that go over a dollar.
In
reading this week, we are reading Meet an
Underwater Explorer. In this nonfiction
story, we meet a marine biologist who has had many accomplishments in her field
of study.
Words
that students need to know include the following:

Depths-deepest
or lowest part of something
·
Endangered-threatened
with becoming extinct
·
Equipment-tools
and supplies
·
Explorer-person
who travels in unknown places for the purpose of discovery
·
Pollution-dirtying
of the air water or soil
·
Precious-having
great value

of a thing pushing against another
·
Surface-outermost
part of something
In English, we are continuing to learn about
nouns. We will be learning plural
possessive nouns and writing using exact nouns.
In writing, we will work on detail sentences. We will be learning if detail sentences are
trash or treasures.
In handwriting, we are learning the lowercase d,
q, g, and o.
For
Science, we will be starting to study the ocean by doing several projects and
making books.
In Social Studies, we are finishing the
chapter on how we learn about communities.
We will be learning tips on how to find out information about our
community. We will also be reading books
about communities. We will be doing and
end of the chapter review. In our
Scholastic News this week, we will be reading about
This week is a review week in spelling. Students will be tested on the 30 basic words
we had during the past 5 weeks. Words
include the following:
last head friend thin
left class luck drop
does sock shut front
save smoke come cube
smile love leave clay
eight paid seem weigh
coach sew though most
own soap
Shhhhhhh
. . . don’t tell! The bonus this week
will be writing all the challenge words correctly.
